A hazard is anything that has the potential to cause harm – think sharp tools, hot surfaces, or loose clothing near machinery. A risk is the actual probability that this hazard will hurt someone. Precautions are the smart procedures we put in place to reduce or eliminate these risks entirely.
Risk assessments are the legal method we use to ensure workshops are safe for everyone. Teachers, technicians, site teams, and even students must conduct these assessments regularly. They're not just paperwork – they're your safety net that ensures every tool and machine is appropriate and safe to use.
Quick Tip: Remember the simple formula: Hazard + Risk = Need for Precautions. This will help you identify safety issues in any workshop situation.

Machine Safety Precautions
Machines in Design Tech workshops can be brilliant for creating professional-quality work, but they demand serious respect. The safety systems in place aren't suggestions – they're your lifeline when things go wrong.
Guards are your first line of defence against sharp machine parts like blades and cutting edges. Never remove or bypass these protective barriers, even if they seem to slow down your work. Those yellow and black lines around machines aren't just decoration – they create a safety zone ensuring only one person operates the machine at a time.
Safety signs throughout the workshop communicate vital information about dangers, required protective equipment, and proper procedures. Learn to recognise these symbols quickly. Most importantly, every machine has emergency stop buttons that can instantly prevent serious harm when pressed.
