A Linha Curva - Itzik Galili
Ever wondered how dance can transport you straight to a Brazilian street party? This piece is pure celebration, capturing the infectious energy of Brazilian culture through movement that'll make you want to join in.
The choreography draws heavily from samba - that energetic, rhythmic dance style that's impossible to sit still to. You'll also spot influences from capoeira, which is this amazing Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends fighting, dancing, acrobatics, and music all into one flowing art form. Think of it as dancing and martial arts having the coolest baby ever.
The carnival atmosphere is everywhere - from the colourful lighting that creates a chequerboard effect on stage to the brilliant costume choices. All dancers wear identical black vests with coloured lycra shorts in ten different carnival-inspired colours, showing equality whilst celebrating diversity.
Quick Tip: Listen for the live percussion - four musicians create the samba music that drives the entire piece, making it feel like you're right there at carnival!
Within Her Eyes - James Cousins
This piece hits you right in the emotions, exploring the painful journey of grief and loss within a relationship. It's the complete opposite of the party vibes from A Linha Curva, showing how dance can express our deepest sorrows.
Watch how the female dancer never touches the floor - she's constantly supported, representing how grief can leave us feeling disconnected from reality. The dancers deliberately avoid eye contact, showing how loss can create barriers even between people who love each other. Every movement reflects the slow grieving process we all go through.
The lighting starts with natural brightness but gradually darkens throughout the performance, mirroring how grief can dim our world. Meanwhile, the electronic music by Seymour Milton was composed specifically for this dance, creating haunting sounds that perfectly match the emotional journey.
Remember This: The costumes are deliberately ordinary - everyday clothes in light colours for her, dark for him - making the piece feel relatable and real rather than theatrical.
