Why Crimes Stay Hidden: Personal Barriers

Not all crimes make it to police reports, and personal reasons often keep victims silent. Understanding these barriers helps explain the gap between actual crime rates and official statistics.

Fear tops the list of reasons people don't report crimes. Victims worry about retaliation from offenders, especially when they know them personally. This fear extends to family members too - nobody wants to put their loved ones at risk by speaking up.

Shame and embarrassment also silence many victims. Some crimes carry social stigma that makes people reluctant to come forward. They'd rather suffer in silence than face potential judgment from others.

Sometimes it's simply about disinterest or feeling unaffected. Witnesses might see underage drinking or someone else's property being damaged but think "not my problem" and walk away without reporting it.
