laws made by parliment through passing Acts of Parliament 

the monarch, the house of lords and the house of commons

the house of lords is made up of members known as peers (around 800), their main role is to double check new laws

who are the lords? and what is their role?

the house of commons is made up of elected representatives (650 members of parliament), every MP represents a constituency after being elected

the governments job is to run the country and parliaments job is to represent the people, the majority of MPs are in the political party that forms the government 

a bill, a bill has to be agreed on by houses of parliament and have royal assent 

what is the proposal for a new law? and what happens before it becomes a law?

the initial report released to the public to respond to when a new law is considered 

a document published by the government that sets out the details/plans for the statute and allows the bill to be seen before parliament 

it must go through a series of stages through parliament and more commonly starts in the house of commons

the name of the bill and its main aims are read out and a formal vote is taken

priciples are debated in house and a vote is taken

representatives look at the bill to find any issue and suggest amendments 

committees report back to the full house so they can vote on the suggested amendments 

final debate and vote taken on the bill, the final decision to pass or reject

after the third reading the bill goes to the house of lords, then goes through the same stages as first held in the house of commons, when the lords amend the bill it goes back to the commons who accept or reject the amendments - they get the last say as they are the people’s elected representatives 

after the bill is passed it goes to the monarch to sign which is known as giving the royal assent - the bill then becomes an Act of Parliament 

- the criminal justice act 2003 ~ changed the double jeopardy law because of Ann Mings successfull campaign and the MacPherson Report.      - the Crime (sentences) Act 1997 ~ introduced mandatory minimum sentences for a range of repeat offences e.g automatic life sentence for second serious sexual or violent crime.       - Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 ~ rushed through parliament due to moral panic and many flaws appeared as most dog attacks are not committed by 4 banned dog breads
