Understanding Criminal Offences and Court Processes
Summary offences are the least serious crimes that only go to magistrates' courts - think minor theft or driving offences. You're looking at 3-6 months in prison maximum, so nothing too dramatic.
Triable either way offences give courts some flexibility. Crimes like assault, theft, or fraud can be dealt with by magistrates if they're straightforward, but crown court takes over when things get more serious. It's basically the court system's way of matching the punishment to the crime.
Indictable offences are the big ones - robbery, rape, murder. These skip straight to crown court because they need proper jury trials and can result in life sentences.
Quick Tip: The more serious the crime, the higher up the court system it goes. Simple as that!
Before any trial kicks off, there's the whole bail situation. Under the Bail Act 1976, you've got a right to bail unless there's a good reason to keep you locked up. Unconditional bail means you're free until your court date, whilst conditional bail comes with strings attached - maybe handing over your passport or sticking to a curfew.
The court might refuse bail if you're accused of something serious with strong evidence against you, or if you're considered a danger to the public. Then it's remand in custody until sentencing.
Plea bargaining is where things get interesting. Plead guilty and you might get a lighter sentence, but you're giving up your right to a fair trial. Plead not guilty and the case continues. It's a gamble that could pay off or backfire spectacularly.
If you don't like your sentence, appeals let you challenge either the conviction or the punishment. Cases move up the chain from magistrates to crown court, then potentially to the Court of Appeal, and finally the Supreme Court if it's a major legal issue.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
