Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW)
The CSEW collects data by asking samples of the population about their experiences with crime, regardless of whether they reported these incidents to police. This approach creates a victim-centered perspective of crime that complements official police statistics.
The survey offers several advantages: it captures unreported crimes (increasing validity), maintains consistency year after year (ensuring reliability), and uses a substantial sample of 50,000 participants (providing representativeness). Because it operates independently from government, respondents may feel more comfortable sharing truthful information without fear of political manipulation.
Despite its strengths, the CSEW faces challenges. The survey is expensive and time-consuming, suffers from a 24% non-response rate, and notably excludes corporate and white-collar crime from its scope. Additionally, there's always potential for respondents to exaggerate their experiences.
Did you know? Between April 2021 and March 2022, the CSEW recorded 194,683 sexual offences and nearly 1.5 million theft incidents, while data from October 2021 to June 2022 showed an 8% decrease in overall offences compared to March 2020.
The CSEW maintains ethical standards through confidentiality and anonymity protections, ensuring victims don't feel frightened or embarrassed when sharing their experiences. This approach helps provide a more accurate picture of crime trends over time than relying solely on reported incidents.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
