Understanding Networks and LANs
Think about how you share photos with friends or print documents at school - that's networking in action! A network connects two or more computers so they can share information and resources wirelessly or through cables.
Local Area Networks (LANs) cover small geographical areas like your school or home. Each device connected to the network is called a node, and the organisation owns all the network infrastructure. This setup gives schools complete control over their digital environment.
The benefits are pretty impressive: you can communicate digitally, share files instantly, use shared printers and scanners, and update software from one central location. Plus, organisations can keep their sensitive data secure from outside threats.
However, networks aren't without challenges. Large networks need skilled technicians to install and maintain them, which costs money. Security risks from unauthorised access are constant concerns, requiring strong passwords, software restrictions, encryption, and regular password changes.
Key Insight: Network reliability depends on disaster recovery plans, failover systems, backup equipment, and regular data backups to ensure 24/7 service.

Client-server networks feature powerful servers that manage files and provide services to other computers. The clients (like your school computer) rely on servers for data and communication. This setup delivers faster access speeds because servers are specifically designed to handle multiple client connections efficiently.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks work completely differently. Every computer has equal status - no single machine controls the network. Each peer acts as both client and server, storing its own files whilst accessing others' files when needed.
P2P networks suit smaller organisations perfectly because they're simpler to manage. However, client-server networks dominate larger organisations where centralised control, security, and performance matter most.
