Ever wondered how your computer decides what to do? It all comes down to logic gates - simple circuits that take inputs and produce outputs based on specific rules.
The NOT gate is the simplest one - it just flips whatever you put in. Input a 1, get a 0. Input a 0, get a 1. Think of it as the opposite machine.
AND gates are pickier - they only output 1 when both inputs are 1. It's like needing both keys to open a safe. OR gates are more generous - they output 1 if either input (or both) is 1.
Then you've got the combination gates: NAND (which is AND followed by NOT), NOR (OR followed by NOT), and XOR .
💡 Quick Tip: Remember NAND and NOR as "NOT-AND" and "NOT-OR" - they're just the opposite of AND and OR gates!
Truth tables show every possible combination of inputs and their outputs. They're like recipe cards for logic gates - follow the pattern and you'll always get the right answer.
Combining Logic Gates
Real computer circuits don't just use one gate - they combine multiple Boolean operators to create complex decisions. This is where things get interesting!
When you see something like (A OR B) AND (NOT C), you work through it step by step. First, figure out what A OR B gives you. Then work out NOT C. Finally, combine those results with AND.
Let's break down that truth table example: with three inputs (A, B, C), you get eight possible combinations (from 000 to 111). For each combination, you calculate each part separately, then combine them.
The key trick is working from the inside out, just like in maths. Handle the brackets first, then apply the operations in the right order. Once you master this pattern, you can tackle any Boolean logic problem.
