Understanding States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas

States of Matter and Particle Behaviour
Ever wondered why you can walk on ice but swim through water? It's all about how particles are arranged and move in different states of matter.
In solids, particles are basically best mates who never want to separate - they're tightly packed together in neat, regular patterns. These particles can only vibrate on the spot because strong forces of attraction keep them locked in place. Think of a crowded lift where everyone's squished together but can only wiggle slightly.
Liquids are like a busy school corridor - particles are still close and touching, but they've got enough space to slide past each other. The arrangement becomes irregular, and whilst there are still some forces holding them together, they're weaker than in solids. This is why you can pour liquid but it still stays together.
Gases are complete chaos - particles zoom around freely with loads of space between them, constantly bumping into each other like dodgeball gone mad. There are virtually no forces of attraction, which explains why gases spread out to fill any container.
Top Tip: Remember the three states by thinking about a school day - solids are like assembly (everyone in rows), liquids are like corridors (moving but close), and gases are like the playground (everyone spread out)!
When changes of state happen - like melting, freezing, evaporating, or condensing - you're not creating new substances. These are physical changes that are completely reversible, so ice can become water, then steam, then back to water again without becoming something different.
