P4 - Understanding Atomic Structure in Physics

Atomic Structure and Nuclear Physics
Atoms are the smallest parts of any element that can exist - think of them as nature's ultimate Lego blocks that build everything you see. These incredibly tiny particles have a radius of just 0.1 nanometres and contain no overall electrical charge, making them perfectly balanced.
Every atom consists of three main particles: protons (positive charge, mass of 1), neutrons (no charge, mass of 1), and electrons (negative charge, almost no mass). The protons and neutrons huddle together in the central nucleus, whilst electrons zip around in shells at different energy levels.
Scientists figured this out through trial and error. The early "plum pudding model" suggested atoms were like chocolate chip biscuits with electrons scattered through positive "dough." However, Rutherford's clever scattering experiments revealed that atoms actually have a dense, positive centre - leading to our current nuclear model.
When electrons absorb radiation, they jump to higher energy levels further from the nucleus. When they drop back down, they emit radiation - it's like a cosmic game of musical chairs that explains how atoms interact with light and energy.
Key Insight: Understanding that mass number (total protons + neutrons) and atomic number (just protons) define each element helps you navigate the entire periodic table with confidence.
