Search Patterns Overview

Search patterns are the backbone of effective crime scene investigation. SOCO (Scenes of Crime Officers) carefully choose which method to use based on the location's size and layout. The goal is simple: collect every piece of evidence without damaging or contaminating it.

Spiral searches work brilliantly for compact crime scenes. You can start from the centre and work outwards, or begin at the perimeter and spiral inwards. This method ensures you cover every area in an organised, circular pattern.

The quadrant method breaks large scenes into manageable chunks. Teams divide the area into zones, then search each section thoroughly. For example, a car might be split into five zones: front offside, front nearside, back offside, back nearside, and the boot.

Remember: The search method depends entirely on the scene's characteristics - there's no one-size-fits-all approach.

Advanced Search Techniques

Line searches are perfect for large outdoor areas where you need systematic coverage. Investigators walk in straight, parallel lines from one side to the other, then return along the same path. It's methodical and ensures nothing gets missed in expansive spaces.

The grid method takes line searching further by adding a second sweep at a different angle. After completing the initial parallel lines, investigators change direction and search perpendicular to their first pass, creating a grid pattern that double-checks every area.

Wheel searches require multiple investigators starting at the centre, then moving outwards like bicycle spokes. Whilst thorough, this method has a major drawback - all investigators gathering at the centre can potentially damage evidence there.

Top tip: Grid searches are excellent for thorough evidence collection, but wheel searches need extra care to protect central evidence.
