Physics Fundamentals: Motion and Forces
Ever wondered why scientists are so picky about the words they use? Distance and displacement might sound similar, but they're completely different! Distance measures the total length of the path you've travelled - like if you walked around your entire school building. Displacement, however, only cares about where you started and where you ended up - it's the straight-line distance between those two points.
This brings us to scalars and vectors - two types of measurements that pop up everywhere in physics. Scalars only have size (called magnitude), like distance or temperature. Vectors are more complex because they have both size and direction, like displacement or velocity.
Forces are the real game-changers in physics because they can do three amazing things. They can get stationary objects moving, change how fast or which direction moving objects travel, and even change an object's shape. Think about how wind creates waves on water - that's a force changing the water's shape!
Contact forces need objects to actually touch each other to work. Friction is probably the most familiar - it's what stops your trainers from sliding on the floor when you walk. Air resistance is friction's cousin that slows down falling objects by pushing against them as they move through the air.
Quick Tip: Remember that displacement is like a straight line "as the crow flies", while distance is the actual route you took!
