Conductors and Insulators

Think about your phone charger - it's got metal wires inside covered by plastic coating, and there's a brilliant scientific reason for this design! Conductors are materials that let electrical current flow through them easily, whilst insulators are materials that block or resist electrical flow.

Metals like copper, aluminium, and steel are excellent conductors because of their special atomic structure. Inside metals, you've got neat rows of positive ions (atoms that have lost electrons) arranged in what scientists call a crystal lattice. Between these ions flows a "sea of free electrons" that can move about easily - this movement creates electrical current.

The more delocalised electrons a material has, the better it conducts electricity. Silver and copper are brilliant conductors because they have loads of free electrons, whilst materials like lead and tin have fewer free electrons, making them poorer conductors.

Key Point: The plastic covering on wires acts as an insulator to keep you safe from electric shocks whilst the metal wire inside carries the current!

Liquids and gases behave differently. Pure distilled water is actually an insulator, but tap water and salt water conduct electricity because of dissolved minerals and salts (called electrolytes). Most gases are poor conductors too, except in extreme situations like lightning strikes!
