Understanding Hydrocarbons and Crude Oil

Crude oil might look like boring black gunk, but it's actually a treasure trove formed from dead plankton that got squashed under pressure for millions of years. This mixture contains hydrocarbons - molecules made up of just hydrogen and carbon atoms stuck together.

The simplest hydrocarbons are called alkanes, which only have single bonds between their carbon atoms. They follow a neat pattern with the formula C_nH_{2n+2} - so if you know how many carbons there are, you can work out the hydrogens! The first four alkanes you need to know are methane (CH₄), ethane (C₂H₆), propane (C₃H₈), and butane (C₄H₁₀).

Fractional distillation is the clever process that separates all these different hydrocarbons based on their boiling points. The crude oil gets heated to 400°C, and as the vapours rise up a tall column, they cool down and condense at different heights.

Key Insight: Longer hydrocarbon chains have higher boiling points because they have stronger intermolecular forces between molecules, making them stickier and harder to separate.
