Energy Changes in Chemical Reactions

Chemical reactions are basically about breaking old bonds and making new ones - and this always involves energy transfers. When you break bonds, you need to put energy in (like snapping a strong rope takes effort). When new bonds form, energy gets released (like two magnets snapping together).

Exothermic reactions are the exciting ones that release heat energy to their surroundings, making things warmer. Think of combustion (burning), respiration in your cells, or neutralisation reactions in chemistry class. These reactions are dead useful - they power hand warmers and those self-heating coffee cans you see in shops.

On the flip side, endothermic reactions absorb energy from their surroundings, making things colder. Photosynthesis does this (plants need energy from sunlight), and so does thermal decomposition. The most practical example? Those instant cold packs for sports injuries that get freezing when you squeeze them.

The activation energy is like the initial push needed to get any reaction started - even exothermic ones need this energy kick to begin. Catalysts are brilliant because they lower this activation energy, making reactions happen more easily without getting used up themselves.

Key Insight: Energy is never created or destroyed during reactions - it just moves around. This conservation of energy principle helps you predict whether reactions will heat up or cool down their surroundings.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
