Static Electricity and Circuit Components
Ever wondered why your hair stands up after going down a plastic slide? That's static electricity in action! When you rub insulating materials together, electrons jump from one material to another, creating charged objects that produce electric fields around themselves.
Potential difference (measured in volts) is what pushes current through circuits - think of it like water pressure in pipes. Different components behave uniquely: filament lamps increase their resistance as they get hotter, whilst resistors keep their resistance constant. Diodes are like one-way streets, only letting current flow in one direction.
Mains electricity in the UK runs at 230V and uses three wires with specific colours. The live wire (brown) carries the current, the neutral wire (blue) completes the circuit, and the earth wire (green and yellow stripes) keeps you safe by preventing appliances from becoming dangerous.
Quick Tip: Remember the wire colours with "Brown Bad Boys" for live, "Blue Better Be" for neutral, and "Green Good" for earth!
Current, Power and Circuit Arrangements
Current is simply the flow of electrical charge, measured in amps - imagine electrons marching through wires like soldiers in formation. Resistance (measured in ohms) shows how difficult it is for current to flow, whilst power (measured in watts) tells you how much energy is being transferred per second.
The magic formula V = I × R (Ohm's law) connects voltage, current and resistance. You'll also need P = I × V for power calculations. Remember that direct current flows in one direction (like batteries), whilst alternating current constantly changes direction (like mains electricity).
Series circuits are like single-lane roads where current stays the same throughout, but voltage splits between components. Parallel circuits are like multi-lane motorways where current splits between branches, but voltage stays the same across each branch.
The National Grid uses clever transformers to transport electricity efficiently. Step-up transformers increase voltage for power lines (higher voltage means less energy loss), whilst step-down transformers reduce voltage to safe levels for your home.
