Traditional Energy Sources
Fossil fuel power stations are still the backbone of our energy system, burning oil, coal, and gas to generate electricity. These release about 30 MJ of energy and create greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide when they burn. Whilst they're reliable and can meet demand quickly, they're major contributors to climate change.
Nuclear power stations are absolute powerhouses, using uranium or plutonium as fuel. They release a massive 300,000 MJ of energy - that's 10,000 times more than fossil fuels! The best part? No greenhouse gases are produced because there's no burning involved.
However, nuclear power comes with its own challenges. The radioactive waste needs to be stored safely for many years, which requires careful planning and significant costs.

Renewable Energy Revolution
Wind power uses turbines positioned on tall hills to catch the wind's force. As wind speed increases, so does the power generated, making it a clean renewable source. The downside? When there's little wind, you get little electricity - making it quite unreliable.
Wave and tidal power harness the ocean's movement to generate electricity. Wave generators float on the surface and move up and down with the waves, whilst tidal power traps water from high tides and releases it through turbines. Both connect to the national grid through underwater cables.
Hydroelectric power works by collecting rainwater in reservoirs, then letting it flow downhill through turbines that spin electricity generators. Solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity, whilst solar heating panels use the sun's energy to heat water. Geothermal energy taps into heat from radioactive substances inside the Earth, pumping water onto hot underground rocks to create steam.
Remember: Renewable sources never run out and don't produce harmful waste, but they often need large areas and can be unreliable depending on weather conditions.
