Anaerobic Respiration

When you're exercising hard and your muscles can't get enough oxygen, they switch to anaerobic respiration. This process breaks down glucose without oxygen, producing lactic acid and a smaller amount of energy (ATP) compared to normal aerobic respiration.

The chemical equation for this process is quite simple: glucose → lactic acid + energy (ATP). Some of this energy is also transferred to the environment as heat. It's important to understand that anaerobic respiration produces less energy than aerobic respiration, which is why you can't maintain intense exercise for very long periods.

If muscles work hard for an extended time without sufficient oxygen, they become fatigued and don't contract efficiently. This is when you start feeling that burning sensation in your muscles during intense exercise.

Did you know? After exercise, your body needs extra oxygen to break down the built-up lactic acid. This additional oxygen requirement is called the oxygen debt - that's why you keep breathing heavily even after you've stopped exercising!
