Understanding Key Terms for A-Level Physics Waves

Wave Basics and Types
Transverse waves are brilliant to visualise - think of water waves where the water moves up and down whilst the wave travels horizontally. The oscillations happen at right angles to the direction the energy travels. On the flip side, longitudinal waves like sound have oscillations parallel to the energy direction, creating compressions and rarefactions.
When we talk about waves oscillating, we mean they vibrate back and forth with regular timing. The frequency tells you how many complete waves happen per second, whilst amplitude measures the maximum distance particles move from their resting position - bigger amplitude means more energy.
Wavelength is the distance between identical points on consecutive waves, and the period is how long one complete oscillation takes. These measurements are essential for wave calculations you'll encounter in exams.
Top Tip: Remember that frequency and period are inverses of each other - if frequency doubles, period halves!

Wave Behaviour and the Electromagnetic Spectrum
When waves meet new materials, three things can happen: they can be absorbed (energy taken in), transmitted (passed through), or reflected (bounced back). Waves can also be refracted, meaning they change direction when entering a different medium. The refractive index measures how much a material bends light.
Electromagnetic waves form a massive spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays. Microwaves heat your food and enable satellite communication, whilst infrared radiation is heat you feel from a fire. Ultraviolet light can cause sunburn, X-rays let doctors see your bones, and gamma rays are the most energetic of all.
The higher the frequency, the more dangerous the radiation becomes. Ionising radiation like UV, X-rays, and gamma rays can knock electrons off atoms, potentially damaging living cells. That's why we need protection from these types of electromagnetic waves.
Remember: The electromagnetic spectrum goes from low frequency radio waves to high frequency gamma rays - each type has unique properties and uses!
