Ancient Greece wasn't one united country like Ireland today -... Show more

Think of a city-state (or polis) as a mini-country. Each one included a main city and all the farmland around it, with its own government, laws, and army - basically everything a country needs to survive.
Athens and Sparta were both Greek, but they were fierce rivals who disagreed on almost everything. Athens focused on education, art, and democracy, while Sparta was all about creating the toughest soldiers in the world.
Understanding the difference between democracy (where citizens vote) and oligarchy (where a small group rules) is crucial here. Athens invented democracy, but remember - only free men born there could vote, not women, slaves, or foreigners.
Key Point: The word democracy comes from Greek words meaning "people power" - but it only applied to about 10-20% of Athens' population!

Athens was like the brain of ancient Greece - they valued education, philosophy, and creating beautiful art and buildings. Their democracy meant male citizens could vote in the Assembly and debate new ideas freely.
For boys, life was pretty good. From age 7, they went to school learning reading, writing, maths, music, and public speaking. Girls had a completely different experience - they stayed home learning household skills like cooking and weaving from their mothers.
Athens built their wealth through trade and had the most powerful navy in Greece. Their ships called triremes controlled the Mediterranean Sea, and their port at Piraeus was constantly busy with merchants from all over the known world.
Did You Know: Athenian girls rarely appeared in public and had almost no legal rights compared to women in Sparta!

Sparta was like a giant military camp where everything revolved around creating unbeatable soldiers. They had an oligarchy run by two kings and elder councils - no voting or debating allowed.
The Agoge was Sparta's brutal military training programme. Boys were taken from home at age 7 and lived in barracks with little food, learning to fight and survive. It sounds harsh, but it created the most feared army in all of Greece.
Surprisingly, Spartan girls had more freedom than Athenian ones. They went to school, did sports, and could own land because Sparta needed strong mothers to produce strong future soldiers.
The helots did all the farming and labour work. Spartans were so outnumbered by helots that they needed their powerful army partly to prevent slave rebellions.
Remember This: Athens valued the mind and creativity; Sparta valued strength and discipline above everything else.

The differences become really clear when you compare what life was actually like. In Athens, a typical day might involve going to the marketplace, attending Assembly meetings, or watching plays in the theatre.
In Sparta, days were structured around military training, physical fitness, and preparing for war. Even meals were communal affairs where soldiers ate together in mess halls.
Athenian women lived very restricted lives, rarely leaving their homes except for religious festivals. Spartan women, however, were expected to be tough and independent, especially when their husbands were away fighting wars.
The economies were totally different too. Athens used coins and traded with everyone, whilst Sparta deliberately used heavy iron bars as money to discourage trade and keep people focused on military life.
Exam Tip: Use specific Greek terms like polis, agoge, and helots in your answers to show you really understand the topic!

Athens was all about democracy, education, and naval power. They valued art, philosophy, and trade, but only free men could participate in politics. Women had very few rights and stayed mostly at home.
Sparta was an oligarchy focused entirely on military strength. Boys joined the harsh Agoge training from age 7, whilst girls got education and sports to become strong mothers. The helots did all the work whilst Spartans focused on being soldiers.
The biggest takeaway? These city-states show how differently societies can develop. Athens chose intellectual freedom (for some), whilst Sparta chose military discipline for everyone.
Memory Trick: Athens = Art and Architecture; Sparta = Soldiers and Strength. This'll help you keep them straight in exams!
