Migration Basics and Key Players
Ever wondered why people pack up their entire lives to move to completely different countries? There are actually three main types of people who migrate, and each has very different reasons for making such a massive life change.
A refugee is someone who's been forced to flee their home country because of serious dangers like war, persecution, or natural disasters. They didn't choose to leave - they had to. An asylum seeker is a refugee who's taken the next step by formally applying to stay permanently in their new country. Think of it as going from temporary safety to seeking a permanent new home.
Economic migrants are different because they choose to move, usually chasing better job opportunities or a higher quality of life. Unlike refugees, they're not running from danger - they're running towards opportunity.
Quick Tip: Remember the difference - refugees are pushed out by danger, economic migrants are pulled in by opportunity!
