Compușii ionici se formează prin transferul de electroni între atomi, transformându-i în ioni. Procesul trebuie să respecte regula fundamentală a neutralității electrice - compusul final nu poate avea sarcină electrică netă.

Pentru a determina formula corectă a unui compus ionic, trebuie să analizăm sarcinile ionilor implicați. De exemplu, în oxidul de aluminiu $$Al_2O_3$$ , aluminiul formează ioni $Al^{3+}$ , iar oxigenul formează ioni $O^{2-}$ . Formula finală $Al_2O_3$ asigură că suma tuturor sarcinilor positive egalizează suma sarcinilor negative.

Echilibrarea ecuațiilor chimice este obligatorie pentru a respecta legea conservării masei. Numărul de atomi din fiecare element trebuie să fie identic în ambele părți ale ecuației, ceea ce realizăm folosind coeficienți stoechiometrici.
