Titration Method
Titration is all about precision, so your setup matters loads. Start by rinsing your burette with the acid you'll be using, and rinse your pipette with the alkali - this prevents any leftover water from messing up your concentrations. Clamp the burette to a stand and fill it with acid right up to the 0 mark, making sure you read the meniscus (the curved surface) accurately.
Use the pipette to measure exactly 25cm³ of alkali and transfer it into a conical flask. Pipettes are brilliant because they measure fixed volumes really precisely. Pop the flask on a white tile underneath your burette - the white background makes it dead easy to spot colour changes during the reaction.
Add about 4 drops of methyl orange indicator to your alkali in the flask. The solution should turn yellow initially. This indicator will tell you exactly when your reaction is complete by changing colour from yellow to orange.
Top Tip: Always swirl the flask whilst adding acid - this speeds up the reaction and ensures proper mixing!
Now for the exciting bit! Open the burette tap and slowly add acid whilst swirling the flask constantly. When you start seeing a slight colour change, slow right down and add the acid drop by drop. Once you get a complete colour change from yellow to orange, stop immediately and record your titre (the volume of acid used). This first go is your rough titre, so repeat the experiment several times until you get concordant results (results within 0.10cm³ of each other), then calculate the mean titre for your final answer.
