Structure of the Atom
Your atoms are made up of three main particles, each with their own special job. Protons carry a positive charge (+1) and live in the nucleus at the centre of the atom. Neutrons have no charge (they're neutral) and also hang out in the nucleus alongside the protons.
Electrons are the rebels of the atomic world - they zip around the nucleus in orbits, carrying a negative charge (-1). What's mental is that electrons are absolutely tiny compared to protons and neutrons, weighing about 1/1800th as much!
The atomic number tells you how many protons are in an atom's nucleus. This number is like an atom's fingerprint - it determines what element you're dealing with and where it sits on the periodic table. Meanwhile, the mass number is simply the total count of protons and neutrons crammed into the nucleus.
Mind-blowing fact: If an atom were the size of a football stadium, its nucleus would only be about the size of a marble in the centre!
