Metals vs Non-Metals: The Great Electron Exchange
Metals are the show-offs of the periodic table - they're shiny, strong, and love to lose electrons to form positively charged ions. Think of them as generous atoms that give away their outer electrons easily, leaving them with more protons than electrons.
This electron-losing behaviour gives metals their amazing properties. They have high melting points (try melting a copper coin!), high density (metals feel heavy), and they're good conductors of heat and electricity. Plus, they're malleable, meaning you can hammer them into different shapes without breaking them.
Non-metals are completely different - they're greedy for electrons and love to gain them, forming negatively charged ions. They typically have low melting points, low density, are poor conductors, and are brittle (they snap rather than bend).
Quick Tip: Remember MGLBC for metals - they Melt high, are Good conductors, Lose electrons, are Bright (shiny), and Conduct electricity!
The further down a group you go, the easier it becomes for metals to lose electrons. This happens because the outer electron shells get further from the nucleus, weakening the attraction between positive protons and negative electrons. This makes metals lower down the groups more reactive - they're practically throwing electrons away!
