Metallic Bonding and Structure
Picture metal atoms like a perfectly organised football crowd - they're arranged in tightly packed layers that form a regular lattice structure. But here's where it gets interesting: the outer electrons don't stay put with their atoms like you might expect.
Instead, these electrons break free and create what scientists call a 'sea of delocalised electrons' that flows around the metal. When the electrons leave, the metal atoms become positively charged ions. These positive ions are strongly attracted to the negative sea of electrons around them - this powerful attraction is called metallic bonding.
This special bonding explains why metals have high melting and boiling points. The strong electrostatic attraction between the positive metal ions and the electron sea takes loads of energy to break apart.
Key Insight: The 'electron sea' isn't just sitting there - it's what makes metals brilliant conductors of electricity. When you heat a metal, these delocalised electrons gain kinetic energy and can move even more freely!
Alloys are mixtures of metals with other elements, and they're actually stronger than pure metals. In pure metals, the uniform layers can slide over each other easily, making them quite soft. But when you add different-sized atoms to create an alloy, they mess up the regular structure, making it much harder for the layers to slip past each other.
