Rate and Extent of Chemical Reactions - Equilibrium
This unit covers one of the most important concepts in GCSE chemistry - understanding how reactions can work in both directions. You'll master equilibrium and learn why some reactions never seem to finish completely.
Getting comfortable with these ideas will help you tackle exam questions with confidence and understand real-world processes like industrial chemical production.
Reversible Reactions
Think of reversible reactions like a two-way street - they can go forwards AND backwards! Instead of reactants simply turning into products and stopping, the products can actually turn back into the original reactants again.
The classic example is nitrogen and hydrogen making ammonia: N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃. Notice that special double arrow? That tells you the reaction works both ways.
When this happens in a closed system (imagine a sealed container where nothing can escape), something brilliant occurs - equilibrium is reached. This means the forward and backward reactions happen at exactly the same rate, creating a perfect balance.
Key Point: Equilibrium only happens in closed systems where no chemicals can escape or be added!
Equilibrium Position
Here's where it gets interesting - at equilibrium, the concentrations of reactants and products stay constant, but they don't have to be equal! Both reactions are still happening, but they're perfectly cancelling each other out.
Picture a busy roundabout where cars enter and leave at the same rate - the number of cars stays the same, but cars are still moving. That's exactly how equilibrium works in chemistry.
We describe this using position of equilibrium. If there are more reactants than products, the equilibrium "lies to the left." More products than reactants? It "lies to the right." This simple concept will help you predict what happens in chemical reactions.
Remember: Equal reaction rates doesn't mean equal concentrations - there's usually more of one side than the other!
Le Chatelier's Principle
Initially, the forward reaction races ahead because there's loads of reactants available. But as reactants get used up, this reaction slows down whilst the backward reaction speeds up (more products means more chance of them reacting backwards).
Eventually, both reactions reach the same rate - equilibrium achieved! This is where Le Chatelier's principle becomes your best friend for predicting what happens next.
Le Chatelier's principle states that if you change the conditions of a reaction at equilibrium, the system will respond to counteract that change. It's like the reaction is trying to restore balance - absolutely essential for understanding how temperature, pressure, and concentration affect reactions.
