Understanding atoms and how they bond together is the foundation... Show more

Ever wondered what makes up everything around you? Atoms are the building blocks of all matter, containing a central nucleus with protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. Elements contain only one type of atom and can't be broken down further - think of them as chemistry's alphabet.
Compounds form when two or more elements chemically combine together. Unlike mixtures, you need chemical reactions to separate them back into individual elements. Mixtures are much easier to deal with - you can separate them using physical methods like filtration (for sand and water) or chromatography (for separating ink colours).
The periodic table arranges all elements by atomic number, with elements in the same column (groups) having similar properties. Group 1 metals like sodium are highly reactive and get more reactive as you go down. Group 7 halogens like chlorine are also reactive but get less reactive going down the group.
Key Insight: The number of outer shell electrons determines how an element behaves - Group 1 has 1 outer electron, Group 7 has 7 outer electrons.
Scientists developed our understanding of atomic structure through clever experiments. Rutherford's scattering experiment proved atoms have a tiny, dense nucleus by firing particles at gold foil. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons - they help explain why early periodic tables based on mass didn't quite work.

Chemistry gets really interesting when atoms start bonding together! There are three main types of chemical bonding: ionic, covalent, and metallic. Each type creates materials with completely different properties.
Ionic bonding happens when metals give electrons to non-metals, creating charged ions that attract each other strongly. This creates giant structures like salt crystals that have high melting points and conduct electricity when dissolved. Covalent bonding occurs when atoms share electrons - this can create small molecules like water or giant structures like diamond.
Metallic bonding is what makes metals so useful. Metal atoms share delocalised electrons that can move freely, explaining why metals conduct electricity and heat so well. Pure metals are quite soft because their atoms are arranged in layers that slide over each other, but alloys (metal mixtures) are much harder.
Remember: Diamond is incredibly hard because every carbon atom bonds to four others, whilst graphite is slippery because it has layers that slide past each other.
Nanoparticles are incredibly tiny particles with special properties due to their size. They're used in everything from sun cream to electronics, though scientists are still studying whether they might be harmful to health.
