Earth's Atmosphere: Past, Present and Future
Earth's early atmosphere was nothing like the air we breathe today. Massive volcanic eruptions pumped out carbon dioxide and water vapour, creating a thick, steamy blanket around our planet. As things cooled down, the water vapour condensed to form the first oceans.
Everything changed when tiny bacteria and algae began photosynthesis. These microscopic life forms started gobbling up carbon dioxide and spitting out oxygen. Over millions of years, CO₂ levels dropped whilst oxygen levels soared, creating the atmosphere we know today.
Today's atmosphere is roughly 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and just 0.04% carbon dioxide. However, human activities like burning fossil fuels are creating a carbon dioxide imbalance, pushing CO₂ levels higher than they've been for thousands of years.

The greenhouse effect works like a natural blanket for Earth. The Sun sends short wavelength radiation to Earth, which absorbs it and re-emits long wavelength radiation. Greenhouse gases (like CO₂, methane, and water vapour) trap this heat, keeping our planet warm enough for life.
Global warming happens when we pump too many greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This gradual temperature increase leads to melting ice caps, extreme weather, changes in rainfall patterns, and disrupted wildlife habitats. Human activities like farming cattle, deforestation, and burning fossil fuels are the main culprits.
Air pollution creates several nasty chemicals. Nitrogen oxides form when car engines get super hot, causing acid rain and breathing problems. Sulfur dioxide comes from burning dirty fuels and also causes acid rain. Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas from incomplete combustion, whilst carbon particulates create smog and breathing difficulties.
Your carbon footprint measures all the greenhouse gases you're responsible for producing. You can shrink it by eating less meat, using public transport, and recycling more. Scientists use peer reviews to double-check climate research because there are still uncertainties in some evidence.
