Complete and Incomplete Combustion Basics
When hydrocarbons (compounds made of hydrogen and carbon) burn with plenty of oxygen, you get complete combustion. This process produces only carbon dioxide and water - nothing else!
Take methane as an example: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O. The key here is having enough oxygen supply. You can actually test for these products using limewater (which turns cloudy with CO₂) and anhydrous copper sulphate (which turns from white to blue with water).
Incomplete combustion happens when there's not enough oxygen around. Instead of just CO₂ and water, you also get carbon (soot) and the dangerous gas carbon monoxide. This is why you might see black marks around a poorly adjusted Bunsen burner!
Quick Test Tip: Remember that complete combustion always produces just two things - carbon dioxide and water. If you see carbon or carbon monoxide mentioned, it's incomplete combustion.
The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide
Here's something that could literally save your life: carbon monoxide is a silent killer. This toxic gas has no smell, no colour, and no taste - making it impossible to detect without proper equipment.
Carbon monoxide is deadly because it hijacks your red blood cells. It combines with haemoglobin (the stuff that normally carries oxygen) and prevents oxygen from getting around your body. This leaves you feeling drowsy, then unconscious, and can eventually cause death.
The good news? You can protect yourself easily. Get carbon monoxide detectors fitted in your home and have gas appliances checked regularly by qualified engineers. These simple steps have saved thousands of lives.
Complete combustion gives out more heat energy and produces no dangerous gases. Incomplete combustion produces less energy but creates the toxic carbon monoxide and messy soot - that's why proper ventilation matters so much with gas appliances.
