Ionic and Covalent Compounds: Properties That Matter
Ionic compounds form when metals and non-metals create strong electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged ions. Think of table salt - it has sky-high melting points because breaking apart that giant lattice structure requires massive amounts of energy.
These compounds love water and dissolve easily because their charged ions interact brilliantly with water molecules. However, solid ionic compounds won't conduct electricity since their ions are locked in place. Melt them or dissolve them though, and suddenly they become excellent conductors as those ions break free to carry charge.
Simple molecular covalent compounds behave completely differently. They have low melting points because whilst the covalent bonds within molecules are strong, the forces between separate molecules are pathetically weak. Most won't dissolve in water (no charged particles to interact) and they're rubbish at conducting electricity.
Giant covalent structures like diamond and graphite are the superstars of the chemical world. These macro molecules contain millions of atoms all covalently bonded together, creating materials with extraordinary properties.
