Understanding Reaction Rates
Think of rates of reaction like watching your phone battery charge - it starts fast, then gradually slows down until it stops completely. In chemistry, we measure how quickly reactants get used up and products get made over time.
When you plot a graph of product amount against time, the gradient tells you everything. A steep gradient means a fast reaction, whilst a gentle slope shows things are slowing down. Once the line becomes horizontal (plateaus), the reaction has completely finished - no more products can form.
The reaction rate equation is simple: rate = change in amount of substance ÷ time taken. This gives you the gradient of your graph and tells you exactly how speedy your reaction is.
Quick Tip: The steeper the graph at the beginning, the faster your reaction is going!
