Bonding and Structure Essentials
You'll encounter three fundamental types of chemical bonding, and each one creates materials with totally different properties. Ionic bonding happens when electrons jump from one atom to another, creating charged particles called ions that arrange themselves in giant lattice structures.
Covalent bonding works differently - atoms actually share electrons in pairs rather than transferring them completely. You'll need to know four different ways to represent covalent bonds for your AQA exams, and this sharing creates everything from simple molecules to massive structures.
Metallic bonding creates that special "sea" of delocalised electrons that makes metals so useful. These free-moving electrons explain why metals conduct electricity and can be shaped without breaking.
Quick Tip: Remember that the type of bonding directly determines a material's properties - ionic compounds have high melting points, metals conduct electricity, and covalent structures can vary enormously in their characteristics.
The structure matters just as much as the bonding type. Giant lattice structures in ionic compounds require massive amounts of energy to break apart, which explains their high melting and boiling points. Meanwhile, polymers are just long chains of repeating units (called monomers) that can stretch for thousands of atoms.
Alloys prove that mixing things up often works better than staying pure. These metal mixtures are actually harder than pure metals because atoms of different sizes disrupt the neat layers, preventing them from sliding over each other easily.
