Catalysts and How They Work
Catalysts are absolute game-changers in chemistry - they speed up reactions without getting used up themselves. Think of them as the ultimate wingman for chemical reactions!
Here's the clever bit: catalysts work by lowering the activation energy needed for a reaction to start. They create an alternative pathway that requires less energy, meaning more particles can successfully react when they collide. It's like finding a shortcut up a mountain instead of climbing the steepest route.
Because catalysts aren't consumed in the reaction, you only need tiny amounts to speed up loads of reactants - making them incredibly cost-effective for industry. However, they're quite picky about which reactions they'll help with.
Reaction profiles are brilliant for showing how catalysts work. The peak of the curve (activation energy) will always be lower with a catalyst present, whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic. The overall energy change (ΔH) stays exactly the same though.
Key Point: Catalysts don't change what products you get - they just help you get them faster and with less energy input!
Measuring Reaction Rates
You can calculate rate of reaction using this essential formula: Rate = Amount of reactant used (or product formed) ÷ Time. There are three main experimental methods you'll need to know.
The precipitation method works when mixing clear solutions creates a cloudy precipitate. Simply time how long it takes for a mark underneath your flask to disappear from view. Faster disappearance means faster reaction - though this method is quite subjective since everyone's eyes are different.
Change of mass experiments use electronic balances to track gas escaping from reactions. As gas bubbles away, the mass drops - and quicker mass loss indicates a faster reaction. Just remember to do this in a fume cupboard if the gas is harmful!
The gas syringe method directly measures the volume of gas produced over time. More gas in less time equals a faster reaction rate. Be careful though - if your reaction is too vigorous, you might blow the plunger right out of the syringe!
Exam Tip: Practice plotting graphs of mass change or gas volume against time - these frequently appear in exam questions and help you visualise reaction rates clearly.
