Atomic Structure Basics

Think of an atom as the ultimate building block - incredibly tiny at just 0.1 nanometres across! Every atom contains three main particles that work together like a perfectly balanced team.

Protons carry a positive charge (+1) and live in the nucleus (the atom's centre). Neutrons have no charge but also hang out in the nucleus, giving atoms their weight. Electrons are negatively charged and zoom around the nucleus in shells - they're so light they barely count towards the atom's mass!

The atomic number tells you how many protons an element has, whilst the mass number shows the total protons plus neutrons. To find neutrons, simply subtract: mass number - atomic number = neutrons.

Quick Tip: Remember that atoms are neutral overall - they always have equal numbers of protons and electrons!

The Periodic Table and Electron Configuration

The periodic table isn't just a random chart - it's brilliantly organised! Elements are arranged by their atomic number, creating patterns that help predict how they'll behave.

Groups (vertical columns) contain elements with similar properties because they have the same number of outer shell electrons. For example, Group 1 elements all have 1 electron in their outer shell, making them highly reactive metals. Periods (horizontal rows) show elements with the same number of electron shells.

Electron shells fill up in order: the first shell holds 2 electrons maximum, the second holds 8, and the third also holds 8. This arrangement determines how elements react with each other.

You can spot metals (left side), non-metals (right side), and metalloids (the zigzag border between them) easily. The far right contains noble gases - elements so stable they rarely react with anything!

Remember: The group number directly tells you how many electrons are in the outermost shell!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
