Atomic Structure & Isotopes
Isotopes are simply different versions of the same element that have identical chemical properties but different masses. Think of them as siblings in the same family - they look similar but have different weights.
Here's what makes isotopes special: they always have the same number of protons (which determines what element they are) but a different number of neutrons (which changes their mass). Since they're the same element, they also have the same number of electrons in their neutral state.
The maths is straightforward once you get the hang of it. Number of protons equals the atomic number - this never changes for a given element. To find neutrons, just subtract the atomic number from the mass number. For electrons, it's usually the same as protons, unless you're dealing with ions (charged atoms).
Quick Tip: For ions like Clโป, remember that negative ions have gained electrons. So Clโป has 17 protons (atomic number) plus 1 extra electron, giving 18 electrons total.
When scientists talk about relative isotopic mass, they're comparing an isotope's mass to 1/12th of a carbon-12 atom - it's like having a universal measuring stick. Relative atomic mass takes this further by calculating the weighted average of all an element's isotopes, which explains why atomic masses on the periodic table aren't whole numbers.
