Atomic Structure Basics

Think of an atom like a tiny solar system with different parts doing different jobs. The nucleus sits right in the middle, acting like the sun, whilst electrons zoom around it in shells, much like planets in orbit.

Electrons are the speedy, negatively charged particles that create the atom's overall size. They're so light they have virtually no mass, but they're absolutely essential. These little particles move in electronic shells around the nucleus, and it's their orbits that determine how big the atom actually is.

The nucleus is where all the action happens - it's packed with protons (positively charged) and neutrons (no charge). Here's the mad bit: even though the nucleus is tiny compared to the whole atom, it contains almost all the atom's mass. It's like having a bowling ball at the centre of a football pitch!

Quick Tip: Remember that electrons have virtually no mass, so when calculating atomic mass, you only need to worry about protons and neutrons in the nucleus.

The most important rule to remember is that atoms are neutral because they have equal numbers of protons and electrons. The positive and negative charges cancel each other out perfectly. However, when atoms become ions, this balance gets disrupted, and they gain an overall charge.
