Purity in Chemistry

Purity in chemistry means something completely different from everyday life. Whilst you might think pure orange juice just has nothing artificial added, chemists define purity as containing only one compound or element - nothing else mixed in.

This distinction matters because impurities dramatically change how substances behave. They'll lower melting points, make substances melt over a range of temperatures instead of at one precise point, and cause boiling to happen over a temperature range too.

You can test for purity by comparing your sample's melting point with the known value from a data book. If they don't match, you've got impurities on your hands.

Quick Check: Pure substances have sharp, precise melting and boiling points - impurities make everything messy and unpredictable!

Formulations - Chemistry by Design

Formulations are brilliant examples of chemistry in action - they're useful mixtures designed with a specific purpose in mind. Each ingredient is carefully measured to contribute exactly what's needed.

Take paint as a perfect example. The pigment gives colour, the solvent dissolves other compounds and controls thickness, the binder (resin) holds everything together, and additives fine-tune the physical and chemical properties.

You'll find formulations everywhere: pharmaceutical medicines, cleaning products, fertilisers, food and drink, fuels, and cosmetics. The ratio or percentage on products tells you exactly what's inside, helping you choose the right formulation for your needs.

Real World: Every time you read ingredients on a bottle or packet, you're looking at a carefully designed formulation!

Testing and Analysis Techniques

Chromatography works like a race between different substances. Anything dissolved in the mobile phase moves up through the stationary phase, but molecules with higher solubility travel further whilst those attracted to the paper stay closer to the start.

Flame emission spectroscopy is fascinatingly simple. When you put a sample in a flame, electrons get excited and jump to higher energy levels. As they drop back down, they release energy as light - and different atoms produce different colours.

The chlorine test is straightforward - it bleaches damp blue litmus paper. Instrumental analysis methods like spectroscopy are expensive but offer huge advantages: they're incredibly fast, sensitive, and accurate.

Science Fact: Spectroscopy can identify multiple metal ions in one sample and even measure their concentrations through light intensity!
