What are acids and alkalis?

Think of acids as solutions packed with hydrogen ions H+H+ - these are basically protons floating around in water. You might also hear them called hydronium ions H3O+H3O+, which is just a fancier way of describing the same thing.

Alkalis are the complete opposite - they're solutions containing hydroxide ions OHOH-. Here's a quick tip: whilst people often use 'base' and 'alkali' interchangeably, alkalis are specifically metal bases from group 1 of the periodic table.

The brilliant thing about acids and alkalis is that they're involved in tons of useful reactions. You'll use them for neutralisation reactions, working out solution concentrations, and creating salts and other compounds. Master these basics now, and you'll find chemistry much easier later on!

Quick Tip: Remember H+ for acids, OH- for alkalis - it's that simple!

Testing for acids and alkalis

Testing whether something is an acid or alkali is surprisingly straightforward, and you've got three main methods to choose from.

Litmus paper is your go-to option - it's cheap, quick, and reliable. Pop some into your solution and watch the magic happen: acids turn litmus red, whilst alkalis turn it blue. Dead simple!

Universal indicator works similarly but gives you way more information. Instead of just red or blue, it produces a whole rainbow of colours depending on how acidic or alkaline your solution is. This makes it perfect when you need more detailed results.

For the most precise measurements, you'll want a digital pH meter. These give you exact pH readings and are brilliant for proper experiments where accuracy matters. They're mainly used in research, but understanding pH numbers will help you grasp just how strong different acids and alkalis really are.

Remember: Red = acid, Blue = alkali with litmus paper!

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
