Testing for acids and alkalis
Testing whether something is an acid or alkali is surprisingly straightforward, and you've got three main methods to choose from.
Litmus paper is your go-to option - it's cheap, quick, and reliable. Pop some into your solution and watch the magic happen: acids turn litmus red, whilst alkalis turn it blue. Dead simple!
Universal indicator works similarly but gives you way more information. Instead of just red or blue, it produces a whole rainbow of colours depending on how acidic or alkaline your solution is. This makes it perfect when you need more detailed results.
For the most precise measurements, you'll want a digital pH meter. These give you exact pH readings and are brilliant for proper experiments where accuracy matters. They're mainly used in research, but understanding pH numbers will help you grasp just how strong different acids and alkalis really are.
Remember: Red = acid, Blue = alkali with litmus paper!
