The Periodic Table Decoded
Every element on the periodic table is like a profile card showing four crucial bits of information. The atomic number (bottom number) tells you how many protons are in the nucleus, and here's the clever bit – it also tells you how many electrons are buzzing around outside.
The relative atomic mass (top number) is the combined weight of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Most of these masses are rounded to whole numbers, but copper and chlorine are exceptions because their isotopes create unusual averages.
Understanding atomic structure is dead simple once you know the basics. Protons carry a +1 charge, electrons have a -1 charge (and are 2000 times lighter), whilst neutrons are neutral with the same mass as protons.
Quick Tip: In a neutral atom, the number of protons always equals the number of electrons – they balance each other out perfectly!
The table's layout isn't random either. Group numbers (vertical columns) tell you exactly how many electrons sit in an element's outer shell, which determines how it will react with other elements.
