Understanding Acids and Alkalis: Key Properties and Examples

Acids and Alkalis: The Basics
You'll encounter acids both in the lab and at home every day. In science lessons, you'll work with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid - these are the heavy hitters that need serious safety gear like goggles because they're corrosive.
The acids you know from daily life include lemon juice, vinegar, cola, and orange juice. They're much milder but still acidic! On the flip side, alkalis in the lab include sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide, whilst everyday alkalis are things like soap, toothpaste, and indigestion tablets.
Neutral substances like pure water, alcohol, and sugar sit right in the middle - they're neither acidic nor alkaline. This becomes really important when we start mixing acids and alkalis together.
Quick Safety Tip: Strong acids and alkalis are corrosive, so always wear safety goggles when handling them in the lab!
The magic happens during neutralisation - when you mix an acid with an alkali, you get salt and water. For example, sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid → sodium chloride + water. The products are always neutral, and if the water evaporates, you're left with salt crystals.
Testing substances is dead easy with indicators. Litmus paper is your best friend here - it turns red in acids, blue in alkalis, and purple in neutral substances. For more precise measurements, pH probes give you exact readings and are incredibly accurate.
