Business Types and Structures
You'll encounter three main types of businesses that operate very differently. Private limited companies are family-owned businesses with shares that can only be sold if all shareholders agree - you'll spot them by 'Ltd.' after their name. Public limited companies trade shares on stock exchanges where anyone can buy them, marked by 'PLC' after their name. Not-for-profit organisations don't aim to make money for owners but instead reinvest any surplus back into their mission.
Private limited companies offer brilliant protection through limited liability, meaning owners can't lose more than they've invested. Banks also trust them more than sole traders when it comes to loans. However, setting up costs more due to legal paperwork, and they must publish annual accounts (though not publicly).
Public companies can expand rapidly and diversify their operations whilst maintaining limited liability protection. The downside? Getting thousands of shareholders to agree on decisions becomes nearly impossible, and hostile takeovers become a real threat when shares trade freely.
Quick Tip: Remember the endings - Ltd. means private (limited shareholders), PLC means public (anyone can buy shares)!

Not-for-profit organisations operate completely differently from traditional businesses. They generate income to cover costs but pump any extra money back into projects that benefit the community rather than lining owners' pockets.
Charities represent one major type - they enjoy tax relief but face strict regulations and rely heavily on unpredictable grants and donations. Social enterprises offer a more stable alternative by selling actual products or services, using profits to benefit society whilst maintaining financial independence.
Managing not-for-profits proves challenging due to uncertain funding streams. They can choose between 'unincorporated association' structures (easy setup but unlimited liability) or 'incorporated' structures (more complex but offering limited liability protection that larger organisations typically prefer).
Remember This: Social enterprises = selling products for social good, Charities = relying on donations for social good!
