Business Growth and Finance
Growing your business is like levelling up in a game - there are different strategies you can use. Internal growth (also called organic growth) happens when companies expand naturally by creating new products, innovating existing ones, or opening in new locations. It's slower but safer, like building your skills gradually.
External growth takes a different approach through mergers and takeovers. A merger is when two businesses shake hands and agree to become one, whilst a takeover occurs when one company buys enough shares to control another. Think of it like joining forces versus one player taking control of the game.
Money makes growth possible, and businesses get it from two main sources. Internal finance includes the owner's personal funds, retained profit (money the business keeps instead of paying out), and selling unused assets. External finance involves share capital from investors, bank loans that must be repaid with interest, and overdrafts for short-term cash flow problems.
Quick Tip: Remember that internal growth is usually less risky but slower, whilst external growth can be faster but comes with more challenges!
Changing Aims and Globalisation
Businesses constantly shift their goals based on what's happening around them. Market conditions might force them to become more competitive, whilst new technology can make their current methods outdated. Poor performance, changing legislation, or internal shake-ups like new ownership all trigger strategic changes.
When aims change, companies typically focus on survival, growth, entering or exiting markets, or adjusting their workforce size. It's about adapting to stay relevant and profitable.
Globalisation means businesses operate internationally and wield significant global influence. Companies use imports (goods flowing into a country) and exports (goods flowing out) to trade worldwide. Multi-national companies sell everywhere, often changing locations to reduce labour costs or access better markets.
The internet has revolutionised global competition through ecommerce, allowing businesses to sell worldwide whilst staying in one location. However, trade barriers like tariffs (import taxes), quotas (import limits), and trade blocs (like the EU) can complicate international business.
Remember: Globalisation creates opportunities but also increases competition - businesses must adapt their products to different cultures and markets!
Ethics and Environment
Being ethical in business means doing the right thing, even when nobody's watching. This includes treating all stakeholders fairly, considering your impact on local communities (like avoiding noise pollution), and choosing suppliers who don't use child labour or animal testing.
Environmental responsibility has become crucial for modern businesses. Companies must focus on sustainability - making decisions that protect our planet's future. This means avoiding deforestation, reducing plastic use, and carefully managing emissions that cause air, noise, and light pollution.
Smart businesses realise that being ethical and environmentally conscious isn't just about doing good - it's also good for business. Consumers increasingly choose companies that align with their values, making ethics a competitive advantage.
