Public Limited Companies: The Basics
Ever wondered how you could actually own a tiny piece of Apple or Amazon? That's exactly what Public Limited Companies make possible! A PLC can sell shares to absolutely anyone through stock exchanges like the London Stock Exchange via an Initial Public Offering (IPO).
The key difference from private limited companies is freedom - PLCs don't need to ask for approval before selling shares to new investors. You'll spot them easily because they have "Plc" after their name instead of "Ltd". This setup makes them much more flexible for raising serious money.
However, this openness comes with a price. PLCs face much more public scrutiny since anyone can examine their financial performance. There's also the constant threat of hostile takeovers - if someone manages to buy 51% of the shares, they can take control of the entire company!
Quick Tip: Remember that PLCs trade publicly while Ltd companies keep their shares private - this one difference drives most of their other characteristics.
