Supply and Demand Basics

Supply is all about what firms are willing to sell at different prices. Think of it like this: if you were selling your old phone, you'd be more eager to sell it for £200 than £50, right? That's exactly how businesses think.

When prices are high, firms supply more because they can make bigger profits. When prices are low, they supply less because there's not much money to be made. This creates what economists call a positive relationship - as price goes up, so does the quantity supplied.

Demand works the opposite way and focuses on consumers (that's you!). When something is cheap, you're more likely to buy it because you get great value for money. When it's expensive, you'll probably think twice or look for alternatives.

Remember: Firms want maximum profit, consumers want maximum satisfaction - this creates the tension that drives our entire economy!

Markets and Equilibrium

A market isn't just a physical place like your local shopping centre - it's anywhere buyers and sellers come together to trade. This includes online stores, car boot sales, or even informal trading between mates.

The magic happens at equilibrium, where supply meets demand perfectly. At this point, the price and quantity are just right - firms are happy with their profits and consumers are satisfied with what they're paying. We call this the equilibrium price (Pe) and equilibrium quantity (Qe).

But markets don't always balance perfectly. Sometimes there's excess supply (too much stuff, not enough buyers) which usually leads to price cuts and sales. Other times there's excess demand (everyone wants it, but there's not enough to go around) which pushes prices up.

Quick tip: Next time you see a sale or notice prices rising, ask yourself whether it's excess supply or excess demand causing it!
