Key Marketing Terms You Need to Know
Understanding market growth is crucial for any business - it shows how much a market is expanding by measuring the increase in customers buying products or services. You can calculate this as a percentage, which helps businesses spot whether they're in a growing or shrinking industry.
Market share tells you what slice of the pie a business owns. It's the percentage of customers a company has compared to all the customers in that particular market. Think of it like this: if there are 100 people buying smartphones, and 30 of them choose Apple, then Apple has a 30% market share.
The market leader is simply the business with the biggest slice - they've got more customers than any of their competitors in the same market. Being a market leader often means having more influence over prices and trends, which is why every business wants this position.
Quick Tip: Market share and market growth work together - you can be in a growing market but still lose market share if competitors are doing better than you!
Why Businesses Actually Do Market Research
Smart businesses don't just guess what customers want - they use market research to make informed decisions. The first reason is pretty obvious: they need to check if there's actually a market for their product before spending loads of money developing it.
Pricing is another massive factor. Market research helps businesses discover exactly how much customers are willing to pay for their product. Get this wrong, and you'll either price yourself out of the market or leave money on the table.
