What is Supply?
Supply represents the quantity of a product that businesses are willing and able to offer to the market at different price levels. It's basically how much stuff companies want to sell at various prices.
The supply curve is a brilliant visual tool that shows the relationship between price and quantity supplied. As you can see from the graph, when prices rise, suppliers are willing to produce more - this makes perfect sense because higher prices mean bigger profits!
This creates a direct relationship between price and quantity supplied. When one goes up, the other follows suit, and when one falls, the other drops too. Think of it like this: if chocolate bars suddenly sold for £5 each instead of £1, wouldn't sweet manufacturers want to make loads more?
Key Point: The supply curve slopes upward because higher prices incentivise businesses to produce more goods.
Factors That Change Supply
Several key factors can shift the entire supply curve, affecting how much businesses want to produce at every price level. These supply shifters are crucial for understanding market dynamics.
Technology improvements boost supply by reducing production costs. When companies can make products more efficiently, they're eager to produce more. Meanwhile, external shocks like wars, extreme weather, or government policy changes can dramatically impact supply - think about how droughts affect fruit prices or how conflicts disrupt oil supplies.
Production costs play a massive role too. When wages, raw materials, or rent prices rise, the supply curve shifts left (less supply). Conversely, government subsidies encourage more production by providing financial support to businesses.
Indirect taxes like VAT work in the opposite direction, reducing supply by eating into business profits. It's like a constant tug-of-war between factors that encourage production and those that discourage it.
Remember: Any change in production costs directly affects how much businesses are willing to supply at each price point.
