Year 7 End of Year Exam - Cells – page 1

Animal Cell Structure

Think of an animal cell like a bustling city with different districts, each with its own important job. Unlike plant cells, animal cells come in all sorts of wonky, irregular shapes.

The nucleus is basically the cell's control centre - it's packed with your DNA and tells everything else what to do. It's like the mayor's office running the whole show.

The cytoplasm is the watery stuff that fills up most of the cell, kind of like the streets where all the action happens. Most of your cell is actually just this liquid where chemical reactions take place.

Your cell membrane acts like a really smart bouncer at a club - it's the flexible outer layer that decides what gets in and what stays out. Meanwhile, the mitochondria are like tiny power stations floating around, turning the glucose from your food into energy through respiration.

Quick Tip: Remember that mitochondria are often called the "powerhouses" of the cell because they're where most of your cellular energy comes from!

Plant Cell Structure

Plant cells are basically animal cells that went to the gym and got some serious upgrades! They've got all the same parts as animal cells, plus three extra bits that make them proper tough.

The cell wall is like wearing armor - it's a rigid outer layer made of cellulose that gives plants their strength and stops them from falling over. Think of it as the plant's skeleton on the outside.

The vacuole is a massive water-filled space that keeps the cell pumped up and firm, like a water balloon that stops the plant from going floppy. It's filled with something called cell sap.

Chloroplasts are the real superstars though - they're only found in the green parts of plants and they're stuffed with chlorophyll, the green pigment that captures sunlight for photosynthesis. These little green factories literally make food from sunlight!

Remember: Only the green parts of plants have chloroplasts - you won't find them in roots because they're underground and don't need to capture light!
