Ever wondered how water travels from a plant's roots to...

Plant Transport Systems: Xylem and Phloem

Your body has blood vessels, but plants have something even more specialised - two separate transport systems that never get their jobs mixed up. The xylem is like a one-way motorway that only carries water and minerals upwards from roots to leaves. Meanwhile, the phloem works like a busy two-way street, transporting sucrose (a type of sugar) in all directions around the plant.

Here's what makes these systems so clever: photosynthesis in the leaves creates glucose from carbon dioxide and water, but plants need to convert this into sucrose to transport it safely. Think of sucrose as the plant's fuel that needs delivering to every part that can't make its own food.

The xylem is made of dead cells that form rigid, empty tubes - perfect for handling the high pressure needed to push water up tall plants. These cells are reinforced with lignin, making them incredibly strong and able to support the plant's structure.

The phloem uses living cells with loads of mitochondria for energy. This is because moving sugar around requires active transport - the plant has to work hard to pump sucrose through sieve plates between cells.

Key Insight: Dead cells transport water (xylem), while living cells transport food (phloem) - each system is perfectly designed for its job!
