Common Viral Diseases

Measles is one of those viral diseases that might seem old-fashioned, but it's still around today. It spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, making it super contagious in schools and crowded places.

The telltale signs are a red rash covering the body and a high fever that makes you feel awful. Don't be fooled into thinking it's just a childhood illness - measles can actually be serious or even fatal if complications develop.

The scary bit is when measles leads to pneumonia (lung infection) or encephalitis (brain infection). These complications are why the measles vaccine exists and why it's so important for protecting communities.

Quick Fact: The measles vaccine is incredibly effective - one of the best examples of how vaccines can nearly eliminate dangerous diseases!

HIV works completely differently from measles. This virus spreads through sexual contact or exchange of body fluids like blood, which is why safe practices are so crucial.

Here's what makes HIV tricky - infected people can go years without symptoms whilst the virus quietly attacks their immune cells. During this time, antiretroviral drugs can control the virus by stopping it from replicating in the body.

When the immune system becomes too weak to fight off other infections, the condition progresses to AIDS. This is why early detection and treatment are absolutely vital.

Even plants get viral diseases! TMV (Tobacco Mosaic Virus) creates a distinctive mosaic pattern on leaves that looks a bit like a patchwork quilt. The discolouration stops the plant from photosynthesising properly, leading to slow growth and weaker plants.
